What Is The Function Of Eustachian Tube

The Eustachian tube, also referred to as an auditory tube, connects the middle ear and pharynx. It equalises air pressure in the middle ear to the outside, as well as draining the mucus of the middle ear. This tube is approximately 35 mm long and 3 mm in diameter, and consists of both a cartilaginous part and a bony part. Additionally, four muscles are associated with the functioning of the Eustachian tube.

The Eustachian tube is an auditory tube that connects the middle ear and the nasopharynx. Since the middle ear is not in direct contact with the outside, there is a possibility of a pressure difference forming. The Eustachian tube helps to equalize the pressure on the tympanic membrane.

Function of the Eustachian Tube

Pressure Equalization

The Eustachian tube typically stays closed, but opens when we swallow, chew, yawn, etc. When there is a sudden change in pressure, such as during air travel or scuba diving, our ears may become blocked temporarily. To help equalise the air pressure, we can chew gum or perform other similar activities that allow air to pass through the Eustachian tube between the nasopharynx and the middle ear.

If the eustachian tube does not open, it can lead to discomfort, a ringing sound, dizziness, and other symptoms.

Mucus Drainage

The Eustachian tube drains the mucus of the middle ear. When the membrane of its opening becomes swollen due to nasal congestion, allergies, or upper respiratory tract infection, the fluid gets trapped and clogged. This creates an environment that can support bacterial growth, leading to ear infection.

The swelling can be alleviated by taking decongestants such as oxymetazoline, pseudoephedrine, and phenylephrine.
