Attempting the Biology section of NEET 2023 in 45 minutes
If you’re an aspiring NEET 2023 candidate, you should be familiar with the pattern of the NEET question paper by now. NEET tests students on three subjects - Physics, Chemistry and Biology - for a total duration of 3 hours and 20 minutes. Each question is allotted a little over 1 minute, with a total of 200 questions, out of which 180 must be answered. Biology (Botany and Zoology) comprises of 100 questions (90 to be attempted), while the remaining 100 are divided equally between Physics and Chemistry.
As we can see, the Biology section of the test has been allocated a total of 360 marks. Given that the test is primarily aimed at Biology enthusiasts, it is no easy feat to answer 90 questions in 45 minutes. Before delving into the main focus of the article, let us first take a look at the judicious distribution of 200 minutes.
What are Some Strategies for Dividing Time Between Subjects for NEET Preparation?
If we take into account all metrics of the paper and subjects, time should be allocated as follows:
Section | Time to be Allotted | Brief |
---|
| Physics | 1 hour | Physics is known to be a challenging and time-consuming section for many NEET aspirants. It involves computations and calculations for 80-90% of the questions, which requires a significant amount of time to complete. |
| Chemistry | 50-55 minutes | Given the previous trends, Chemistry relatively consumes lesser time. One must try to attempt the paper in 50-55 minutes. Set this as a target. In case, the Chemistry section that year turns out to be challenging, allocate not more than 1 hour to this section |
| Biology | 39-40 minutes | Biology has concept-based, direct questions. Some questions require matching, some reasoning, some assertion. All in all, this section should be completed in less than 39-40 minutes. Aim to finish in this time frame. |
| OMR Sheet bubbling | 20-25 minutes | This activity requires your attention, as one wrong move can mess up your response, even if you had the correct answer. Students usually complete this task within this time frame. |
Students generally prioritize Biology, Chemistry, and Physics sections in that order to save time, as Biology is usually the easiest to complete in a shorter amount of time.
The Chemistry section is a combination of conceptual and numerical questions, so it would be beneficial to be familiar with the concepts and formulae. Physics is usually the last section in the order, as it is considered to be more time-consuming and students tend to avoid it. Therefore, it is important to be prepared and spend time finding accurate answers.
Every student has a different preparation strategy based on their preferences and strengths. Feel free to adjust accordingly to suit your needs.
How Can I Crack NEET Biology in 45 Minutes?
Practice is the only way to crack 90 questions in 45 minutes or less. There are no shortcuts or fillers - it takes hard work and dedication to achieve this.
NCERT is the right book/resource for NEET Biology. It is highly important and has been emphasised time and again.
To give an idea to those attempting the paper for the first time, questions are usually framed from any line of the NCERT textbooks. The content and context of the questions may or may not repeat from the previous years, but the topic remains the same. If the topic is important, questions are framed differently with the same topic. Another way of asking is by framing questions from a line of NCERT while changing the options. Ultimately, it is essential to have a thorough understanding of NCERT, with no alternatives.
